The Flash of the Firefly: Kindred Book Trilogy

Title: The Flash of a Firefly (Kindred Blood, Book 1)
Author: Amber Riley
Publisher: Self
Length: Approx. 50,000 words
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy Romance

BLURB:
Trying to put his past behind him, Kaden moves to New
York City where he creates a new life for himself. And that
isn’t easy, considering the fact that he’s a six-hundred-year-old
vampire who hasn’t fed on a human in more than a century.
Unfortunately, the past isn’t something you can always escape
from. When old enemies resurface, they come with a message.
His master wants him back and refusing isn’t an option.

Confronted with losing both his freedom, as well as the human
that has captivated him, Kaden struggles to hold onto his
humanity while controlling his darker side. He knows the
showdown is inevitable. He must find a way to stand his ground.

EXCERPT:

Then, a hundred feet away, two figures slowed their pace to match mine. I clenched my jaw and forced my feet to keep moving forward. I hadn’t been looking forward to this day. I knew it would come sooner or later. I just wished that I had listened to my gut instinct in the first place.

Well, there was no going back now. I was within reach of them, and my blood was boiling under my skin.

“What are you doing here?” I snarled.

“It’s good to see you too, Kaden.”

Her hair tumbled down her back, and her jaw set as she forced her full red lips into a big smile. It was a face I hadn’t seen in over two centuries, one I could have gone a thousand lifetimes without seeing again.

“What are you doing here?” I repeated.

“Would you treat your own sister so coldly after all this time?” she asked in a sickeningly sweet voice.

“You’re no relation to me,” I growled through gritted teeth.

She smiled sarcastically. “We’ve come to take you home.”

Guest Post from Amber Riley

Books have been a part of my life starting with the day I came home from the hospital as a baby.
I credit my love for writing largely to that fact. I grew up listening to stories of faraway places and people
that did amazing things.
The Tell Tale Tiger was one of my first books. I received a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales from my
aunt for my second birthday – a book which sits on my shelf to this day. My mother would make up
stories at bedtime which are still favorites. My grandmother read me Amelia Bedelia so many times that
she memorized all of the books, and my grandfather would read me all sorts of stories. In middle school,
I read books like the Baby-Sitters Club. By sixteen, I had my very own Barnes and Noble membership
card and the running joke became that I owned half of the store.
There is something nostalgic about turning the page of a good book and smelling that new book
smell. It takes me back to my childhood – a time when I was taught to let my imagination run wild. How
could I hear all these wonderful stories, and not want to create my own?
The first story I can remember writing was about two pages long. It was about computer
gremlins that came through the monitor and pulled people in. There was a period when I wrote short
stories set in Victorian times. Then, one day, I started writing about Kaden.
If I hadn’t been read to as a child, maybe I would still be an author. I like to think that is the
reason, though. Without good characters, a plot is just a plot. With them, a plot is an amazing trip to
another time and place. Having my imagination built up from the very beginning helped me create
characters that, to me, are very real.
The love of books is something I hope to pass down the through generations. My son, born four
weeks early last December, heard The Tell Tale Tiger before he left the NICU. For his first Christmas,
he received a Hans Christian Andersen book from my aunt. When my husband and I are stationed in
the United States again, I hope that he will hear all the stories I did from the people I heard them from.
Maybe one day he will come to me with his first story. I know that, regardless of him growing up to be a
fan of the literary world, I will encourage his imagination to grow for as long as I can.

Deadly Deliverance Book Barrage Giveaway and Review

My Review:
I really enjoyed the book Deadly Deliverance. I’ve not read a book about human trafficking and it shocked and scared me to find out the things that go on in this world. I’m so sheltered! I loved the main characters Sam and Lisa. They have a relationship that is very easy to relate to. They love each other but a conflict will inevitably arise to make them have to work at their relationship. There is mystery, romance and some nice undercover work in it. It is a quick and easy read and really makes you think. Read it and let me know your thoughts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Deadly Deliverance (Deadly #3)

by Lorelei Confer

BLURB:

Things get personal for Sam Brower, undercover task force
detective for human trafficking, when his niece, Autumn, goes missing.
To make matters worse, he’s forced to work with his ex-girlfriend,
Lisa Conover, former DC cop, when she’s assigned to a cold case involving
his long lost brother.

After infiltrating the gang responsible for the multiple abductions, Sam
and Lisa try to unravel the stories behind the kidnapping of Autumn and
the disappearance of Luke before their cover is blown.

Undercover work doesn’t lend well to trust. Even if they work together
like a fine tuned instrument, will Lisa and Sam be able to salvage love after
all they’ve been through?

EXCERPT:

“Ahh!! Oh!! Yes! Yes! It feels so good! Right there!
Please, don’t stop, please,” Lisa Conover muttered. “Harder, harder! No!
Don’t leave now!” She groaned as she pounded her fists into the hardwood floor. “Damn it! Why did you stop?” she asked Godiva, her twenty-two-pound silver tabby cat, who had jumped off her back and now sauntered over to a sunny spot on the carpet, flopping down in a very unladylike manner. Just like Sam used to do years ago, gets me feeling comfortable and then he takes off.

Lisa’s aching back muscles were so tight from hunching over her computer ten to twelve hours a day every day for the past weeks. She needed a massage. Better yet, she needed a vacation.

She rolled over onto her back and stared above at the open-beamed ceiling of her log cabin in the North Carolina mountains outside Hickoryville. She studied the accumulation of dust bunnies along the beams.

The setting sun cast shadows across the room as she gazed out the two-story floor-to-ceiling windows on one wall. The view of the tranquil scenic mountains in its resplendent fall glory replaced some of the angst she felt about her work. She relaxed and stretched her arms above her head. Her stomach growled, reminding her she hadn’t had any lunch today.

She stood, trying to stretch her still-aching muscles by turning side to side at the waist, touching her toes—or attempting to, anyway.

Then maybe she could get a few more hours of work done before bedtime.

After putting down fresh water and food for Godiva she opened the fridge, hoping to find something for dinner. She knew what she would find but she looked anyway. It was empty except for a couple of eggs, and an older-than-she-knew container of yogurt she couldn’t trust anymore.

She glimpsed down at Godiva, who had already finished her dinner. “I think I’ll run down to The Barn and get something to eat. You can hold down the fort here for a while, right?” she asked Godiva, who sauntered away licking her lips.

She walked the short distance from the kitchen to the corner of the large open room to her desk, which held her state-of-the-art computer system with three screens and a laptop. She sat down to start turning everything off when the phone on her desk rang.

“Conover Investigations, Lisa speaking.”

“Sorry, but I haven’t heard from Sam in years. How did you get my number?”

“This is the last number I had for him. I really need to talk to him ASAP.”

“Maybe I can help you. What’s the problem?”

“I’m sorry I can’t help you. Give me your name and a number where he can reach you, and if I hear from him I’ll let him know you’re trying to get in touch with him, okay?”

“My name’s Luke and he can reach me at…” Then the phone line went dead. He had hung up.

What is it about men? They never say good-bye.

Cozy Hop Book Giveaway

Thank you for hopping by! Here’s a wonderful book by a new author, Jennifer Comeaux.

Blurb:

Nineteen-year-old Emily is new to pairs skating, but she and her partner Chris have a big dream–
to be the first American team to win Olympic gold. Their young coach Sergei, who left Russia
after a mysterious end to his skating career, believes they can break through and make history.

Emily and Chris are on track to be top contenders at the 2002 Winter Games. But when
forbidden feelings spark between Emily and Sergei, broken trust and an unexpected enemy
threaten to derail Emily’s dreams of gold.

Excerpt:

The wind picked up, rustling the trees and sending my empty cup skittering over the
table. Sergei snatched it and noticed the time on his watch.

“Oh, wow, it’s two thirty. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stay this late.”

“No worries. I can sleep till noon tomorrow.”

He rose from his chair, stretching his arms. “Do you think they all killed each other
downstairs?”

“My guess is they played so hard they passed out at some point. That’s been known to
happen.”

I got up and smoothed my skirt. I’d kicked off my sandals hours ago, and the weathered
wood of the patio was cool under my bare feet.

Sergei took a step toward me. “Thanks again for the great meal. And the even better
company.”

“You’re very welcome. I’m so glad you came.”

I stood on tippy-toes to give him a quick hug, but Sergei’s strong arms held me against
him, enveloping my small frame. His body exuded warmth. I closed my eyes and breathed in
the woody scent of his cologne. We’d shared plenty of hugs at competitions, but this felt so
different, like we belonged nowhere else but in this embrace.

After what seemed like both an eternity and a split second, Sergei pulled away, his hands
brushing down my back. He glanced downward and gestured to the door.

“I can let myself out.”

My head bobbed weakly. “Okay. I’ll see you Monday.”

“See you.” He held my gaze a moment longer than necessary. Then he was gone.

I stood paralyzed, listening to the blood pulse in my ears. My heart beat so fast I thought
it might pound out of my chest. I couldn’t have imagined the electricity I’d felt in Sergei’s arms.
It was too real. And I had no idea how I could ever forget it.

Author Bio:

Jennifer Comeaux earned a Master of Accounting from Tulane University and is a Certified Public Accountant in south Louisiana. While working in the corporate world, she sought a creative outlet and decided to put on a paper a story that had played in her head for years. That story became Life on the Edge, her first published novel.

When not working or writing, she is an avid follower of the sport of figure skating, travelling to competitions around the country. Those experiences allow her to see a different side of the sport and serve as an inspiration for her writing. Jennifer is blessed with a wonderful family and many friends who have encouraged her to pursue her dream of being a published author.

My Review: Her One Night Prince

I love books that give you that warm fuzzy feeling when you are finished reading it. Her One Night Prince did that for me. It’s a book about a shy, reserved woman who takes care of her father and tries to convince herself she doesn’t have time for love. She’s heading back to her reunion and trying to find a nice gay man to take her. It just gets better from here. Silly situations ensue as she wants a man to take her to her reunion. She thinks he is gay but he’s actually straight and enjoying the friendship that blossoms. If you enjoy a good romantic story you’ll love this book. Make sure you check out, Her One Night Prince. You won’t be sorry you did.

Book Blurb

Her One-Night Prince is a Cinderella story about a woman’s dream
to be something she’s not for just one night at her class reunion.
As all fairy tales go, however, happy endings don’t come easily.

Shy and sheltered Lydia St. Clair is uncomfortable around men, so
she advertises for a gay man to be her date and revamp her style.
Mitch Gannon answers Lydia’s ad and he’s perfect for the job–
he’s handsome and, even more important, he’s charming.

Unbeknownst to Lydia, Mitch is straight and answered the ad as
the unwitting victim of a practical joke. Before he can reveal the
truth, Lydia is convinced he’s her fairy godmother, ready to
transform her into the belle of the ball. And Mitch, prince that he
is, doesn’t have the heart to set her straight.

Excerpt from book.
With a firm hand against her upper back, Mitch propelled Lydia out of the bar and out the door.
She peered back through the windows and could just make out that waitress standing behind the bar and staring out at them.

“She’s beautiful,” she said, turning back to Mitch. Something about that woman signaled a déjà
vu of sorts in her mind, but she couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

“Who? Edwina?” He glanced into the pub. “Yeah, she is.”

Edwina’s showstopping figure and stunning looks caused Lydia to self-consciously smooth
back her boring, pulled-tight-into-a-bun-as-usual hair. She couldn’t imagine a woman like Edwina
ever advertising in the gay personals. She couldn’t imagine Edwina making a boob of herself by
assuming Mitch worked at a gay bar.

With the heel of her palm, she bonked herself in the side of the head a few times. “Just shoot
me, will you?”

Mitch pulled her hand away from her head. “You’re too hard on yourself, Lydia.”

For a moment she zeroed in on the feeling of his large, warm hand holding hers. It felt good,

like it belonged there, which was a crazy thought. Reality returned, and she pulled her hand from
his grasp.

“What in the world was I thinking?” she asked. Her skin burned from embarrassment, or the
heat of summer, or his touch…or all the above.

“It’s understandable you’d assume I worked at a gay bar. I mean, you think I…er…”

She waved her hand back and forth. “No, no. That was just plain stupidity. What I meant was,
I had this grand notion of you helping me out and transforming me into the belle of the ball. You know, Queer Eye my style or something.” She wrapped her arms around herself despite the warm
air and strode down the alley. If a sinkhole opened up in front of her, she’d gladly fall into it.

He jogged up beside her as they reached the sidewalk. “I don’t know about the clothing and
hair stuff,” he said, “but I could certainly give you advice on men.” He cleared his throat and
coughed. “I mean, since I’m a, ah, man.”

“That’s okay. It was a dumb idea. Besides, I don’t want advice on men. It would be pointless.”
She pulled black-framed sunglasses from her purse and exchanged them for her regular glasses to
block the blinding glare off the sidewalk.

Mitch didn’t respond right away, so she knew he silently agreed with her. Finally, he
asked, “Why would it be pointless?”

She had about a million reasons. “It just would be.”
