Gun Safes are important for gun owners

If you own a gun, even if you don’t have children, you will want to invest in a gun safe. Gun safes ensure that when you are not carrying or otherwise supervising your gun, that it won’t fall into the wrong hands. Some states, including California, can hold a gun owner liable if his gun is stolen because it wasn’t in a safe; and even if there are no legal repercussions in your state, do you really want to deal with the uncertainty and guilt about where and how your stolen gun is being used? When purchasing a gun safe from Gun Safes Now, here are some things you will want to consider:

Size
When it comes to gun safes, size does matter, particularly if you own an array of hand guns as well as hunting rifles. Some gun safes are as small as a large book; others may rival the size of your refrigerator or even your bedroom closet. When deciding which size is right for you, consider your gun collection. If you do not plan on purchasing any more guns, and you only have one or two hand guns, then a smaller-sized safe will be perfectly suitable. But if you think you may upgrade your collection, or if you have larger guns as well as many gun accessories, go bigger, so that there’s room to grow.

Doors
Checking out the door to a gun safe may seem like an odd thing to do, but consider this: if you own valuable weapons, or a thief really, really wants access to them, if the hinges of your gun safe are located on the outside, then they can be manipulated and possibly removed with the right tools, which would render the locking mechanisms useless. Ideally a gun safe’s door should have inside hinges, several bolts on every side, and the door itself should be resistant to any type of tampering.

Locks
Ideally you want a gun safe with a bio-metric lock, as this type of lock requires fingerprints in order to disengage. While pricey, this is the best lock to have if you have children, or simply have an extensive and expensive collection of guns to protect.
If you don’t want to or can’t spring for a gun safe with a bio-metric lock, the fail-safe (pun intended) is a combination lock – though obviously you’ll want to remember the combo!

  1. I used to baby sit for a family that had a gun safe. I love that I never had to worry that their kids would get into the guns, yet I knew if someone threatened our lives I’d be able to get to the gun. Gun safes are a really smart idea.
