If not, why not? Can we improve on ways we interact with our spouse and make them our best friend again?<\/p>\n

My husband and I have been married for 18 years. I am happy to say that he is still my best friend. I think when you have small children at home it’s harder to be as close with your spouse. When the kids get older and can do more on their own it’s easier for you to find your way back together. How can you become your spouse’s best friend?<\/p>\n

1. Get interested in their hobbies. If they like kayaking (like my dh does) then go kayaking with them. One year on our anniversary we had no money. We borrowed another kayak and went kayaking together. I think that was my favorite anniversary.<\/p>\n

2. Have a date night once a week. If you can’t do it then put the kids to bed and spend an hour talking. There are ways to have meaningful times with your spouse without spending money. Get creative! My dh and I go to lunch about once a week while the kids are in school. It’s our time to look forward to spending with each other.<\/p>\n

3. Watch a few shows together. My dh and I dvr shows so that we can watch them when the kids go to bed. I know spending time in front of the tv isn’t the best way to have quality time. But I love watching shows and being in the same room with my dh. Sometimes we pop popcorn or just have a glass of wine.<\/p>\n

4. Do chores together. I love nothing more when after I have made dinner to have him help me do the dishes. It’s a small thing but it means the world. If he’s working in the yard then I go out and begin weeding the garden or the front flower bed. Time spent is what’s important.<\/p>\n

One theme I see is spending time together is what’s important. It doesn’t have to cost money to spend that time together. We seem to spend time together without spending money and it works just as well as if we had an expensive date. Make it a point to spend some time with your spouse and make them a priority. You need a best friend and they do too! What ways do you and your spouse spend time together without spending money?<\/p>\n
