As a wife for over 19 years here’s some tips we’ve learned along the way. Marriage is not easy street. But you can have a better marriage if you just apply some of these tips. Try to do one per week until you are incorporating all 8 tips all the time!
1. Listen: actively listen to what your partner is telling you. To let them know you understand what they are saying repeat it back to them. This is what I hear you saying! You can’t get it wrong that way.
2. Communicate: Your marriage is worth learning how to communicate with each other. Take the time to get some books/tips on how to talk and listen to your partner so that you both get what you need.
3. Do not bring up past hurts. Leave the past in the past. You’re future is what you’re working on!
4. Do not assume you know what the other person is thinking. Sometimes we overthink things. If we are thinking too much about it then just ask your partner what they meant.
5. Let the other person win the argument. It’s not good for anyone to have to be right. Learn to let it go! If you have to be right you might want to look into why you feel you always have to be right. I know I’m wrong about half the time. Admit it and move on…it’s easier on everyone that way. Let it go should be your new mantra.
6. Find some way to encourage your partner every day. It’s always nice to hear what you’re doing right. Focus on what’s right in your relationship as well. I tell my dh that I appreciate how hard he works every day. He, also, tells me that he loves coming home to a nice dinner, clean clothes and a clean house. It’s a win/win!
7. Make sure you admit your mistakes, say I’m sorry and get on with life. Life’s hard enough don’t hold a grudge with anyone. It only hurts you! It’s like drinking poison and praying for the other person to die. Don’t hang on to anger and unforgiveness. Forgiveness for others and yourself is a present you can give yourself.
8. Do not go to bed angry or let bad feelings fester. The best gift you can give yourself is to let go and let God! Forgive and move on, it makes for a happier you
