My appliance died!

We need to hold a funeral for it. I’m sad and yet not really. It’s my big freezer. My mom convinced me when I was young and first married that I had to have an extra freezer. And believe me it is nice. But now that it’s dying I’m not sure I’m going to replace it. The appliances made today just don’t last like they should. I’ve kind of had a love hate relationship with it anyway. I have an extra refrigerator in my garage. The shelves broke, all but 2 in this fridge. So we got another one and kept this as the drink fridge. Silly I know. But convenient now that the freezer is going.

So, I got up yesterday and went to check on my freezer and a Popsicle had melted. Since I have 2 side by sides I decided it was time to consolidate. We’ve known this was coming for about 4 weeks and have been eating out of the freezer. So a lot of it was already gone. I did throw away some food though. This is where the love hate relationship comes in. It allows me to buy more food then we can eat or need. It also allows me to put food up even though I suspect we won’t eat it. I made some spaghetti sauce and somehow it was too sweet. I threw away like 5 containers of that that I had made. It was gross. Why did I keep it?

My freezer is 30 something years old. We’ve enjoyed it for the last 10 years (it was my mom’s before that). But because it costs us money every month in electricity to have an extra freezer so that we can purchase food for future use is it saving us money. I doubt it. Plus, I still ended up throwing food away. I think doing without will be just fine. We will eat more of what is in our freezer instead of forgetting it’s there til it’s too gross to eat. What will this mean for me? It means I will have to go to the store more for bread. Well, I’m already there for milk and this or that so what is one more thing. 🙂

Have you ever had an appliance/item in your home you thought saved you money but then decided maybe it really didn’t?
