Second Nature Excerpt

Second Nature (Forces of Nature Book 2)

Amelia Hoffman always knew she would be with Nathaniel Peplow forever, but after they bonded everything started to go wrong. Nate treats her like the enemy, her siblings are in danger, and an old threat grows closer. As Nate pulls away and Amelia’s burgeoning friendship with a handsome stranger blossoms, she worries she made the biggest mistake of her life. If sorting out her love life wasn’t enough, a new drug emerges that not only threatens the ones she loves, but seems to be part of something larger than she could ever imagine. Amelia’s new and old friends must work together to not only save themselves, but the whole world.

You know you want this book! Here’s a teaser about it.

“So what do you want to talk about?” Nate asked, looking away from me again.

I scoffed, spreading my hands in disgust. “Oh, I don’t know. The weather? The price of tea in China? Or maybe the elephant in the room should be a priority.” I bit my tongue to keep more sarcasm from pouring out of me like venom. I hadn’t realized how much bitterness I harbored until I started to let it out, and now I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to hold it back. Wasn’t sure if I wanted to.

“Do we have anything left to say?” he asked with a shrug.

Tears threatened but I refused to let them even shine in my eyes. After all we had been through together, was there nothing between us? Was I hopelessly in love with a man who wanted nothing to do with me? He looked at me, and that warm golden glow I had come to recognize as his love washed over me. “Do you exist to contradict yourself?” I asked in exasperation.

“What do you want from me, Amelia? You want me to tell you I love you. I do! Is that enough? No, it’s not! I’m not ready to be settled, to be the happy little gaia husband and make little gaia babies!”

“I never asked for that.” My voice wavered, but I had to get the words out. “All I asked was to work it out together. I love you, Nate, but right now, I don’t like you very much. Are you trying to hurt me?”

“You know I wouldn’t do that.” His eyes went wide in indignation.

“How am I supposed to know, Nate?” My voice was dangerously quiet. He gaped at me, his attitude suggesting I was being deliberately obstinate. Nevertheless, I had to get a few things off my chest. “You abandoned me. You stuck around long enough to get my hopes up, then you disappeared. Every time you reappeared, it was with an attitude like you were doing me a favor. And now because I’m over it, I’m the bad guy?”
