February 1952, Mother Nature vs US Coast Guard
Based on real life events The Finest Hours is one of the most chilling (brrr) and heroic rescues in Coast Guard history. It takes place when 2 oil tankers, The Fort Mercer and The Pendleton, off the coast of Boston, MA are caught in one of the worst sea storms and both break in half. While The Fort Mercer sends a call in for help and the rescue crews focus on getting to them, The Pendleton has no radio and one can only speculate their last known coordinates.
Challenging The Odds
Following orders from his superior, Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana), a clean-cut young Coast Guardsman with 1950’s boyish, shy charm named Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) leads up his team of 4 on a 30 ft boat to face not only a cold, snowy, violent storm. But manning a trip over the sound off the coast of Chatham, MA where wave after wave crashes around a boat revving 90 degree angles to make it over to get into the Atlantic seems to be an impossible mission to survive. But with a hesitant but positive attitude Bernie and crew set out to search for whats left of The Pendleton and the 32 crew members trying to keep it afloat after running it aground to buy some time for the rescuers that may, or may not have been coming for them.
Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck), a quiet and shy but confident captain of The Pendleton makes decisions, some that aren’t popular with some of his crew who feel that because he is a single loner that he isn’t making the best decisions to get the rest of them back to their families. He quickly emerges as the leader they need to keep this half ship above the water as they face setback after setback while waiting, and hoping, that someone is looking for them.
Back On Shore
Back on shore, Miriam (Holliday Grainger), Bernie’s fiancée, who after meeting on a blind date and a few months of dating, boldly asked Bernie to marry her, waits with the men manning the Coast Guard station and the whole community to hear the fate of Bernie and his crew. Emotions run high as the brother and widow of the crew of the ill-fated fishing boat, The Landry, that Bernie tried and failed to reach over the bar in a storm, perished at sea, await as the anniversary approaches on the storm that overtook The Landry.
Grab your date and get your tickets!!
I’ll tell you, I’m not a big history movie fan. I have to tell you though, The Finest Hours had me glued to my seat. The boyish Bernie and the love story between he and Miriam made the perfect backdrop for the waves of action that would follow in the finding and rescue attempt for The Pendleton. The regret of not being able to save the men of The Landry, the history of the men of the town and community around the sea and its trades pull you into a time and place of the past with depth and emotion. You are literally living each emotion, each cold wet harsh wave, each sigh, each fear, right up till the credits roll! It’s a fantastic movie! I highly recommend grabbing your date and hurrying on out to watch!
