5 tips to a long successful marriage

Divorce rates are high and not dropping, and people getting married today have a lot of questions on how they can avoid divorce. More importantly, though, they want to know what they can do to keep their marriage happy and successful. The following tips are just some of the key things to follow when making your marriage work.

Communicate the right way

There are right and wrong ways to communicate. Before you ever take the plunge to get married, determine your communication style and the style of your partner. If you are already married, you can still do this. Once you know how the two of you communicate, you can start to talk to each other in the manner that suits you both. This goes a long way in making sure you communicate effectively with one another.

Get a hobby

And not one with your spouse! You need space. They need space. Get a hobby that has nothing to do with them so that you can remain true to yourself. This will also make you have a more fulfilling life, which translates well into your marriage.

Respect boundaries

You need your space and so do they. Is the shed your husband’s domain? Does your wife love to spend time in the kitchen? Give them that space. Allow them to have that time to themselves and respect that they do things a certain way. Your wife may have the kitchen organized a certain way, or your husband may like his dresser drawers a certain way. Leave them that way! Don’t try to change them by pushing into their boundaries.

Accept your partner for who they are

Too often, we have these ideas of who our partner should be and we lose focus of who they actually are. Don’t project your fantasies onto them and see them for the person they are- the person you fell in love with. As time goes on, people can and do change Recognize that and give them that space to grow instead of keeping them in a role you have put them in.

Make time for your relationship

Jobs, kids, and life in general can get in the way of you being a couple. Make time for one another. Reconnect with your partner. Plan date nights, vacations, and even just a few hours out of the week where you two spend time together.
