The Flash of the Firefly: Kindred Book Trilogy

Title: The Flash of a Firefly (Kindred Blood, Book 1)
Author: Amber Riley
Publisher: Self
Length: Approx. 50,000 words
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy Romance

BLURB:
Trying to put his past behind him, Kaden moves to New
York City where he creates a new life for himself. And that
isn’t easy, considering the fact that he’s a six-hundred-year-old
vampire who hasn’t fed on a human in more than a century.
Unfortunately, the past isn’t something you can always escape
from. When old enemies resurface, they come with a message.
His master wants him back and refusing isn’t an option.

Confronted with losing both his freedom, as well as the human
that has captivated him, Kaden struggles to hold onto his
humanity while controlling his darker side. He knows the
showdown is inevitable. He must find a way to stand his ground.

EXCERPT:

Then, a hundred feet away, two figures slowed their pace to match mine. I clenched my jaw and forced my feet to keep moving forward. I hadn’t been looking forward to this day. I knew it would come sooner or later. I just wished that I had listened to my gut instinct in the first place.

Well, there was no going back now. I was within reach of them, and my blood was boiling under my skin.

“What are you doing here?” I snarled.

“It’s good to see you too, Kaden.”

Her hair tumbled down her back, and her jaw set as she forced her full red lips into a big smile. It was a face I hadn’t seen in over two centuries, one I could have gone a thousand lifetimes without seeing again.

“What are you doing here?” I repeated.

“Would you treat your own sister so coldly after all this time?” she asked in a sickeningly sweet voice.

“You’re no relation to me,” I growled through gritted teeth.

She smiled sarcastically. “We’ve come to take you home.”

Guest Post from Amber Riley

Books have been a part of my life starting with the day I came home from the hospital as a baby.
I credit my love for writing largely to that fact. I grew up listening to stories of faraway places and people
that did amazing things.
The Tell Tale Tiger was one of my first books. I received a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales from my
aunt for my second birthday – a book which sits on my shelf to this day. My mother would make up
stories at bedtime which are still favorites. My grandmother read me Amelia Bedelia so many times that
she memorized all of the books, and my grandfather would read me all sorts of stories. In middle school,
I read books like the Baby-Sitters Club. By sixteen, I had my very own Barnes and Noble membership
card and the running joke became that I owned half of the store.
There is something nostalgic about turning the page of a good book and smelling that new book
smell. It takes me back to my childhood – a time when I was taught to let my imagination run wild. How
could I hear all these wonderful stories, and not want to create my own?
The first story I can remember writing was about two pages long. It was about computer
gremlins that came through the monitor and pulled people in. There was a period when I wrote short
stories set in Victorian times. Then, one day, I started writing about Kaden.
If I hadn’t been read to as a child, maybe I would still be an author. I like to think that is the
reason, though. Without good characters, a plot is just a plot. With them, a plot is an amazing trip to
another time and place. Having my imagination built up from the very beginning helped me create
characters that, to me, are very real.
The love of books is something I hope to pass down the through generations. My son, born four
weeks early last December, heard The Tell Tale Tiger before he left the NICU. For his first Christmas,
he received a Hans Christian Andersen book from my aunt. When my husband and I are stationed in
the United States again, I hope that he will hear all the stories I did from the people I heard them from.
Maybe one day he will come to me with his first story. I know that, regardless of him growing up to be a
fan of the literary world, I will encourage his imagination to grow for as long as I can.
